Why insure cargo during transport ??

The transportation of cargo will always be associated with a certain risk.

The international rules are restricting the responsibility of the carrier so that he can be free of responsibility for damage or loss of cargo, or if a responsibility can be claimed then the current rules will minimize the amount that you can claim from the carrier.

The carriers responsibility for export cargo are as follows:

Transportation Limitation Reclamation of damage/loss
Ship (Maritime law) 2 SDR per KG/667 SDR per Cll Visible: Immediately   Concealed: 3days
Truck (CMR law) 8,33 SDR per KG Visible: Immediately   Concealed: 7days
Airfreight (Warsaw/haag convention) 17 SDR per KG Visible: Immediately   Concealed: 14days
Railroad (DSB law) 8,33 SDR per KG - Waggon load 17 SDR per KG Visible: Immediately   Concealed: 7days
Forwarder (NSAB) 8,33 SDR per KG Visible: Immediately   Concealed: 7days

By insuring the cargo during transport, you have minimized your risk of suffering an economical loss.

For new and well packed merchandise, the coverage is normally according to "the extended Danish conditions" equal to the international recognized "Institute Cargo Clauses (A)" which are covering almost any damage of cargo during transport including loss and theft.

These terms are also called "All Risk" and as all other terms they have exceptions. The exemptions are damage caused by the cargo's own nature, inadequate packing, incorrect stowage by shipper, delay, incorrect means of transportation and damages caused by atomic energy.

The coverage are normally following the INCO terms which is having rules for who is carrying the risk and who is contracting for insurance. The insurance starts when the cargo is being picked up at shippers premises and is in effect during transport until arrival at buyers warehouse or the place agreed upon in the insurance.

Institute Cargo Clauses C , equals "Begr‘nsede danske Betingelser"  - mostly used for bulk or used merchandise/machines
Institute Cargo Clauses A, equals "Udvidede danske Betingelser" also known as "all-risk".
With an all-risk insurance nearly all damages are covered.
